Letters to and from Tara McNeill / Thank you from Tara
« on: September 18, 2018, 10:25:10 PM »
Tara asked me to post this message from her to all of us fans from the forum that were able to support her and the other girls at the DVD recording:

Thank you all so so much for travelling all the way to Ireland to see us.  It really meant the world to me that you made such an effort to fly over here and it was wonderful to see your familiar faces in the audience!  I’m just sorry that there wasn’t an opportunity to chat to you all at some point.  I would have loved that! But unfortunately it didn’t work out this time.

I just wanted to make sure you all know how much I appreciated you being there, in the cold all those hours!  It really was one of the best times of my life, and I’m so glad you were there to share in it!  I hope I will see you again soon on the upcoming tours! You are all part of our Celtic Woman family!  Lots of love, Tara xx

She is so sweet! Something I really, really wish I'd been able to express in the PBS interview is this: these ladies are some of the sweetest, most talented people I know and we are soooo lucky to be their fans.

Some more pictures from their show in Utah this January.

Eventually, Facebook will expired the pictures and they'll disappear from the Forum. Once that happens, here's the album they came from so you can still go see them:

CaraNua's cover of A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman is available on iTunes and Spotify now (as well as YouTube)!

I finally got a decent looking transparency done of one of their concert photos and started trying to incorporate into a banner design.

Twitter forced me to move things around more and crop it differently so it would fit in their banner space.

So here's the new version.

What do you think so far?

Which mods have you tried so far?

I made a CaraNua Fans account on Twitter!

I haven't done anything with it yet since I want to set it up a bit before I properly unveil it.

I created a simple little profile picture for starters:

I added a simple banner:

I tried to do give it sort of a "Greatest Showman" feel.

I think the profile pic turned out alright.

Something doesn't look right to me about the banner though, like the text and the original logo don't work together. Maybe that's just me. I don't know.

What do you think?

If it's adequate, I can probably start using the account, but I'm not great with graphics, so if anyone has any banner suggestions or wants to make a better one, I'd sure appreciate it!

Forum Questions & Comments / Board Icons

Different Icons for Different Boards

Here's a snip of the page source from the main Celtic Woman Forum page, showing what it looks like for Susan's board:

         <tr height="64px">
            <td rowspan="2" class="windowbg2" width="83px" align="center" valign="middle"><a href="http://www.celticwomanforum.com/index.php?action=unread;board=79.0"><img src="http://www.celticwomanforum.com/Themes/CWIOH/icons/79/off.jpg" alt="No New Posts" title="No New Posts" border="0" /></a>
            <td class="windowbg2">
               <b><a href="http://www.celticwomanforum.com/index.php?board=79.0" name="b79">Susan McFadden</a></b><br />

See the part in red? That tells us tiny bit about how the board icons work there. The icons are located within the icons directory of a theme.

Each board has a different board id, which we can see in the URL when you access a board, and also in the page source above (see the part in teal).

So basically, the icons in CWF are organized by board ID for starters. Whether all themes can do that or just special ones, I'm not sure yet.

Now the other interesting thing about this source above is the file name.

If we tinker with the file name, we can see how that part works too, based on whether there are read/unread posts:

Here's the icon for board 79 (Sue's board) when there are no new posts:

Here's the icon for board 79 when there are new posts:

Neat, huh?

So next, we need to figure out:
- Is this capability of all themes in SMF 2.x, or do only certain themes support this?
- Is there a standard way to configure this for different themes, or does each theme have its own way?
- Specifically, are the file / folder naming conventions the same.

For giggles, I checked the page source for Tara's forum and picked the "Tara McNeill Link" board arbitrarily as an example.

It looks like the on/off naming convention is the same for the theme Tara's forum uses.

<td class="windowbg" width="6%" align="center" valign="top"><img src="http://www.taramcneillforum.com/Themes/sunset-2-0-1-5/images/off.gif" alt="No New Posts" title="No New Posts" />
      <td class="windowbg2" align="left" width="60%">
         <a id="b4"></a>
         <strong><a href="http://www.taramcneillforum.com/index.php?board=4.0">Tara McNeill Link</a></strong><br />

An important thing to note about Tara's forum vs CWF is that Tara's forum doesn't currently use any board subdirectories in the images folder.

That "Tara McNeill Link" board happens to have ID = 4, which we can see from its URL:

So I wonder if having different icons for different boards is as simple as:
1. Adding a subdirectory for each board within the icons directory of the theme (naming each subdirectory as the board id for that board), then
2. Adding a off.gif and on.gif (black and white vs color), with a separate off/on image for each board, within each board's directory.

I got as far as being able to see the file structure in Tara's forum while logged in as an administrator. But so far, I haven't found a way to add files / directories. That may be a privilege only you have or something that has to be down outside that administrator interface within the forum. I'm not sure yet.

Sadly, I never got around to installing a test forum in a lab, but I can see if there's some documentation on this somewhere we can refer to. My initial thought is it's pretty low risk to tinker around a bit and try it with one of the boards as a test, but as always, it's best practice to back everything up before making changes.

Hopefully this helps!

Homecoming Tour and DVD / Interview on RTE

Celtic Woman did an interview with RTE, posted on February 2, 2018.

It contains a short video interview, but a good one. There's some interesting things about the Homecoming tour they casually mentioned during the interview that should get fans excited!  ;)

The article also contains writeup of the interview.

CaraNua recorded an acapella cover of A Million Dreams (from The Greatest Showman) in Utah before they returned to Ireland.

This is so gorgeous it's a must-listen!

CaraNua does some of the best harmony I've ever heard!

It's not the usual close-up, but I really like this backstage photo of Tara as she prepared to take the stage during the Homecoming show at the 3Arena.
